5 Signs You’re Heading for Holiday Burnout

Because the season of joy shouldn’t come at the cost of your well-being.

For many high-achieving, gifted women, the holiday season can feel like an emotional paradox.

On the outside, it’s “the most wonderful time of the year.” But on the inside, you may be bracing yourself—for the emotional labor, the pressure to perform joy, the invisible weight of making the season meaningful for everyone but yourself.

You’re not alone. And you’re not broken or weak for feeling overwhelmed. In fact, the very strengths that make you exceptional—your sensitivity, empathy, intelligence, and responsibility—can also make you especially vulnerable to burnout this time of year.

And I say that as someone who knows this pattern intimately.

I have a long history of wanting to make the holidays feel extra special. As the oldest of four children, I was the classic “mommy’s helper”—always organizing, helping, making magic wherever I could.

That tender desire to create something meaningful stayed with me into adulthood. Once I became a mom myself—and especially as a single mom—I was intentional about making the holidays feel special without going overboard.

But somewhere along the way, especially after I got married and stepped into more responsibilities at work, the pressure started to pile on. Hosting. Traveling. Cooking. Gifting. Coordinating. Performing joy.

And because I’ve always worked in service to others—whether with students, clients, or colleagues—I often found myself extending emotional energy in every direction but my own.

From the outside, it looked beautiful. But inside, I was depleted.

That’s why this message—and this workshop—matters to me so deeply.

If you recognize yourself in any of this, you’re in the right place.

Here are five signs you may be heading for holiday burnout (even if you’re functioning at a high level):

1. You’re Already Overthinking the Season… in October.

Gifted and high-capacity women often see every possible outcome, every emotional nuance. That’s a strength—but it can become exhausting when you’re mentally managing holiday dynamics weeks in advance.

If you’re already pre-navigating family dynamics, worrying about everyone’s emotional experience, or anticipating how to “make it all work,” your brain is on emotional overload.

Burnout begins in the mental rehearsal long before the actual event.

2. You Feel Responsible for Everyone’s Experience.

You’re the one who holds it all together—emotionally, logistically, energetically.

The magic-maker. The meaning-creator. The one who absorbs stress so others don’t have to.

Sound familiar?

Gifted women often carry a deep sense of stewardship and empathy, but without boundaries, that quickly leads to depletion.

Just because you can hold it all doesn’t mean you’re meant to.

3. Your Nervous System Is on High Alert.

Do you feel restless even when you’re sitting still? Find yourself snapping or shutting down over small things?

This is often the body’s way of saying: “I don’t feel safe or supported right now.”

Holiday environments can be overstimulating—especially for sensitive, high-processing minds. The lights, noise, social dynamics, and sensory overload can keep you in a low-level fight-or-flight state for weeks.

You may be calm on the surface, but your body is sounding the alarm.

4. You’ve Reached Compassion Fatigue Before the Season Begins.

You want to show up with joy and love. But lately, you feel irritable, disconnected, or even resentful—and then guilty about it.

This is especially common for gifted women who are the emotional anchor in their families or communities. You care deeply—but without restoration, your compassion turns into collapse.

Compassion fatigue doesn’t mean you care less. It means you’ve had no space to refill.

5. You’re Dreaming of Escape Instead of Presence.

Whether it’s fantasizing about being alone in a cabin with no expectations—or just feeling like you want to hit fast-forward on the next eight weeks—this is a sign you’re not resourced.

You don’t want to miss your own life. But right now, showing up as your full self feels impossible.

If the idea of rest feels radical… it probably means you need it.

“Just because you can hold it all doesn’t mean you’re meant to.”

What Now?

If any of these signs resonate, it’s not too late. You don’t need to push through and hope for the best.

You can choose differently. You can interrupt the pattern.
